After the removal of a further 10 cm the surface of 1:4 was exposed and a number of items of material culture recovered (Fig.s 15 & 21) . At the surface of 1:4 about 40 ceramic sherds (cat. 7) were found along the south wall of the unit. Another c. 80 sherds (cat. 6) were found further to the north. In the northeast corner an area of slightly darker soil was exposed and was labeled as 1:4 Feature 1. The feature contained a small ceramic pot (cat. 9) and a clay earplug (cat. 10) as well as c. 62 ceramic sherds with a dark brown resin adhering to the exterior surface. The only other feature in the main part of the the unit at 1:4 was a clay square feature c. 5cm deep, located to the north west of jar 01020093. Other items of material culture were exposed on the surface of 1:4 including three large ceramic sherds comprising a flat pot base (cat. 8), a whetstone fragment that matched one found in spit 1:2, twenty-one thick ceramic sherds. At the 1:4 level, a small piece of limestone lies to the east of Jar 01020093 and near the east wall a larger piece (22cm) of limestone was found. In the extension, 1A, the limestone blocks (1:3 Feature 1) were further exposed. Around 1:3 Feature 1, to the east, are ten ceramic sherds (cat. 32) and to the north some small (6-7cm) pieces of sandstone. South of the feature three large ceramic sherds were uncovered (cat. 17). In the extension, 1B, on the surface of 1:4 an iron artefact, possibly a small blade (cat. 42) was found below the stone jar. Two limestone blocks were further uncovered as well and some sandstone chips. A C14 sample was taken at this level as well (cat. 40). In removing the soil of 1:4 a change in the colour was noted. In the matrix there were many bits of quartz and sandstone chips (>150 pieces 2-3cm in size). The matrix at this depth begins to turn a reddish colour. The soil in 1:4 was noted as dark reddish brown (2.5YR 3/3).
