Unit 4, 1:2 The excavation of the second spit revealed the presence of many limestone boulders as well as some further sandstone boulders, and a broken sandstone disc, one part of which was in the middle of the unit and the other on the eastern baulk (Fig. 9). In the north end of the unit a unique group of limestone boulders and pebbles which appear to be water worn were found grouped together and labelled as 1:2 F1. 1:2 F2 was identified adjacent to Jar 01020126 and comprised two slabs of limestone and a piece of sandstone and a whetstone (cat. 408). 1:2 F3 comprised a large limestone slab. 1:2 F4 was the aforementioned half sandstone disc below which was a limestone boulder and 1:2 F5 was another half of a disc in the east baulk near Jar 01020131. Curiously this portion did not match the other half disc found in the unit. 1:2 F6 comprised two pieces of limestone found at the southern end of the unit. 1:2 F7 was a large scatter of ceramic sherds in a fine gravel matrix and some infrequent quartz chunks and small fragments of bone. The feature encompassed both Feature 4 and Feature 8, a limestone boulder. In this area there were a great number of scattered oblong, rather crudely made, ceramic beads (cat. 418, 439).

A great number of ceramic sherds were found in this spit (cat.s 405, 407, 409, 410, 413, 419, 420, 421, 423, 424, 425, 429, 434, 442, 443, 445, 448 and 450). There were also several broken ceramic vessels (cat.s 430, 433, 440 and 441) one of which had a lid (cat. 431). Other artefacts in 1:2 comprised a basalt flake (cat. 406), three hammerstones (cat. 415, 444 and 446), a ceramic weight? (cat. 414), an iron chisel (cat. 417), a spindle whorl (cat. 435), an iron bangle fragment (cat. 436), a cylindrical clay object, possibly an ear plug or gaming piece (cat. 438) and a carnelian bead (cat. 427). Several pieces of charcoal were also collected.
