The surface of spit 1:4 revealed a number of
features, one, 1:4 F1, represented by a different soil colour
and the rest ceramic scatters. The centre of the unit
at this level was distrubed by a termite nest comprising
red clay brought from deeper in the matrix. 1:4 F1
was an area of darker soil (5YR 3/3, while surrounding
matrix was 5YR 4/4) extending out from the east
baulk and encompassing sandstone boulders (1:1 F6 &
1:2 F2) and groups of ceramic sherds labelled cat. 506
and 508. Some bone flecks were encountered within
this feature.
Another concentration of earthenware sherds (cat. 503) was discovered in the northeast corner of the unit
and labelled 1:4 F2. Around and under the large boulder
(1:1 F6), flecks of quartz were found throughout
the deposit.
Along the east baulk, the boulder, 1:1 F8, was uncovered
and revealed to be a shaped cube of sandstone
that is estimated to weigh c. 500 kg based on its dimensions.
This was removed, with some difficulty, to
facilitate continued excavation.
A large scatter of small earthenware sherds (cat. 505)
was uncovered in the northwest corner of the unit
which was labelled 1:4 F3. Just south of this, a piece
of quartz and a hammerstone (cat. 504) were found at
the same level.
In the southwest corner of the unit, under the large
quartz-rich sandstone boulder (1:1 F2), a block of sandstone was uncovered surrounded by ceramic earthenware
sherds (cat. 504) and some fragments of bone.
