In removing the previous spit all of the limestone blocks were taken out of the excavation unit aside from the one located in 2:1 Feature 2. As soil was re- moved from around this block it was shown to be c.48 cm in length and 25 cm wide. To the west of this limestone block lay a circular feature of a different colour, (reddish brown 5YR 4/4), than the surround- ing matrix which was a reddish brown of a differ- ent hue (2.5YR 4/4). Contained within this stain, the top of an upright, ceramic vessel, was visible (the rim was apparently removed/destroyed). There were ceramic sherds, however, scattered around the edges of the dark soil. The soil within this ceram- ic vessel was a different colour, brown (7.5YR 4/3). 2:1 Feature 2, upon excavation, revealed a human tooth and a tooth fragment and small piece of bone. The feature was duly labelled as Burial 4. The teeth were found to sit atop the ceramic ves- sel (cat. 329). Human teeth were also found be- neath the limestone block to the west of the feature. Flecks of charcoal were noted within the burial. Another ceramic vessel was uncovered in this lay- er and was mostly exposed at the surface of 2:2. This vessel, with a diameter of c. 18 cm, sat along the east baulk toward the north end of the unit. A ceramic dish sat atop this globular vessel (cat. 330) acting as a lid. In the central area of Unit 3 a circular feature was identified. 2:2 Feature 1 comprised a thin band of red soil (2.5YR 4/6) surrounding a cir- cular area that was dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3). This feature was about 15 cm in diameter. To the north of Feature 1 another, smaller, circular feature was identified and labelled as Feature 2. It was c. 10 cm in diameter and a dark reddish brown in colour (5YR 3/2). No material was found in either of these features which were less than 10 cm deep. In the southern portion of the unit a piece of aluminium was discovered, deter- mined to be a piece of shrapnel (cat. 306). Along the northern baulk in the eastern part of the unit another ceramic vessel (cat. 314) was exposed. This was labelled as 3:1 Feature 1. The soil colour became a darker red as 2:2 was removed and so the layer designation was changed to 3. The next spit was labelled as 3:1.
