Upon the surface of 3:1 only two new features were noted, 3:1 Feature 1 which was first recognised during the excavation of the preceding spit and comprised a ceramic vessel along the northern baulk of the unit. The second feature was 3:1 Feature 2, representing a circular, dark red (2.5YR 3/6) stain in the centre of the unit with a diame- ter of c. 10 cm. The feature was only 2 cm deep. The ceramics found in the preceding layers were left in situ as they were standing upright and need- ed to be further exposed. These included Burial 4 (previously 2:1 Feature 2), the pot along the eastern baulk (2:2 Feature 3) and the ceramic vessel along the northern baulk (3:1 Feature 1). Eight ceramic sherds were recovered from 3:1 (cat. 313).
