Group W

A 4 x 4 m unit was established on February 25th, 2019, 4 m to the south of Unit 1, its western edge in alignment with Unit 1’s western edge.

This unit was selected for excavation based on the presence of a jar base (#0018) and a decorated disc (D005) with an anthropomorphic figure and concentric circles carved upon it. The figure was facing upwards suggesting, perhaps, that this disc was at some point turned over as frequently these are found decorated side down (see Colani - Shewan/O’Reilly pg. 165).

The elevation atop the base of Jar 0018 was 1121.82 m asl and atop the decorated disc, 1122.03 m asl. Note that the elevations on the south side of the unit are lower than to the north due to the slope of the hill. After the removal of the grass in Unit 2 the elevation at the centre of the unit was 1121.70 m asl.

Several pieces of sandstone and some earthenware ceramic sherds (cat. 100) were apparent. A stone (jade?) bangle fragment (cat. 101) and a bronze bell fragment (cat. 104) were uncovered in 1:1. Unfortunately, both were damaged during excavation. Also uncovered near the decorated disc (D005) was a carved piece of stone (cat. 102) which resembles the haunches of an animal (perhaps simian). Some sherds of coarse earthenware ceramic were found in various locations across Unit 2 (cat. 109, 106, 112). Shrapnel (cat. 117) and other artefacts indicating military activity at the site were also uncovered in 1:1 including bullet casings and hand grenade elements (cat. 103). Another piece of charcoal was found from within the unit (cat. 118).
